Ciqikou is a historic riverside town of stone lanes, teahouses, snack shops and traditional shopfronts in Shapingba. The main streets are free and open throughout the day, while individual museums may charge. Arrive after 17:30 to see the old town transition from daytime street life to evening lights, or go early on a weekday for quieter lanes. Metro Line 1 is the simplest way to avoid heavy road traffic.

Our verdict: Worth visiting for atmosphere, street life and easy metro access, but the busiest main lanes can feel commercial. Explore side streets and compare prices before buying souvenirs.

Metro is the most predictable approach and avoids the old town’s holiday road congestion. If luggage makes walking difficult, set a ride-hailing destination at the Back Street visitor service point or the old main gate.

Best atmosphere

Late afternoon into the evening

An arrival after 17:30 lets you see the stone lanes and shopfronts in daylight before lanterns and signs begin to glow. Weekdays remain the best choice for a calmer visit.

International visitor note

Agree on spice levels before ordering

Confirm what “mild” means for everyone in the group, and keep cooling snacks such as ice jelly nearby. Side lanes are also useful when the commercial main street becomes crowded.
