Quick answer

Prepare Alipay before departure, then test it with a small payment.

Download the official app, register with an international mobile number, verify your passport, and link an eligible international card. Once set up, Alipay can handle everyday QR payments and connect you to taxis, city transport, trains, hotels, and food delivery.

One app, many travel tasks

Alipay works as a travel utility, not only a wallet

For travelers visiting China, Alipay can be an all-in-one life assistant. Alongside in-store and online payments, its international version connects visitors to services for hotel booking, food delivery, ride-hailing, public transport, train tickets, translation, and currency conversion.

App labels can move as Alipay updates its interface, and some mini programs have separate rules for overseas users. Treat the paths below as a practical map, confirm the final amount on screen, and keep a physical card plus a little cash as backup.

Before you leave home

Set up Alipay in four steps

Keep your passport, mobile phone, and bank authentication method nearby. Most travelers can finish the core setup in one sitting, although verification or issuer checks can sometimes take longer.

  1. 1

    Download the official app

Open the App Store or Google Play and search for Alipay or 支付宝. Install the official app before departure so you have time to resolve any app-store or account issue.

    App StoreAlipayInstall
  2. 2

    Create your account

Open Alipay, choose English or another supported language, and tap Sign Up. Register with an international mobile number that can receive the SMS verification code, then create the six-digit payment password requested by the app.

    Open AlipaySign UpVerify number
  3. 3

    Complete identity verification

Open Me → Settings → Account Security → Identity Verification. Follow the prompts to photograph the passport information page and complete the face scan. Clear lighting and an exact passport-name match help avoid delays.

  4. 4

    Link an international bank card

Go to Me → Bank Cards, tap + or Add Bank Card, and enter the card number, expiry date, and CVV. Complete any SMS or 3-D Secure check required by your bank, then select the card as your preferred payment method if needed.

    • Enable overseas and online payments with the issuer.
    • Keep your bank's authentication channel available.
    • Add a second eligible card as backup when possible.

Step 5

Start paying with Alipay

At a physical checkout, the merchant will normally use one of two QR flows. Confirm both the merchant name and amount before approving the transaction.

Method 01

Show your pay code

Open Pay and show your payment QR or barcode to the cashier. The merchant scans it and the payment is processed through your selected method.

Best for: staffed counters and larger stores
Method 02

Scan the merchant

Tap Scan, point the camera at the merchant's QR code, enter or confirm the amount, and authorize the transaction.

Best for: small shops, table QR codes, and taxis

Online payment: When a supported app or website offers Alipay at checkout, select it as the payment method and follow the handoff back to Alipay. For railway tickets, use the official 12306 service and make sure the passenger details match your passport.

Beyond the checkout

Use Alipay for everyday travel tasks

Search labels and city availability can vary, but these are the most useful in-app paths for an international visitor.

Troubleshooting

Common Alipay problems and practical fixes

My card will not link

Ask the issuer whether the card supports international online and wallet transactions. Check that your name and personal details match your passport and bank records, complete any security challenge, and try a second eligible card if available.

Identity verification failed

Retake the passport image in bright, even light with all edges visible. Enter the legal name, document number, and name order exactly as requested, then avoid repeated rapid attempts if the app asks you to wait.

A merchant or mini program rejected payment

Some services do not accept wallets funded by an overseas card. Try paying the merchant directly, change to another eligible card, use a different booking channel, or fall back to a physical card or cash.

I need official Alipay help

Open the in-app Help Center. Alipay's current overseas customer-service number is +86 571 2688 6000, with service hours listed as 08:00–24:00 China Standard Time; international calling charges may apply.
